Fugue ©2020 June 04, Erica H. Adams, Watercolor on Paper: 9 x 20 inches
Knowing oneself in isolation -or quarantine -instead of in relation to others or in community -is a Western understanding of the self and individualism.
Repetition and sameness make it difficult to focus: similar strokes reflect similarity of days accumulated in quarantine with depth formed through layers of darkness and light.
A fugue in Music is a contrapuntal composition in which a short melody or phrase -the subject -is introduced by one part and successively taken up by others and developed by interweaving the parts. A fugue in Psychiatry is a state or period of loss of awareness of one's identity, often coupled with flight from one's usuaL environment, associated with certain forms of hysteria and epilepsy.
